Interoperability – the ability of devices to exchange information and do useful work together – is vital to
the realization of a decentralised smart grid [9]. We believe that while standards are central to
interoperability support in the medium and long term, a critical issue for short-term market impact is the
availability of enabling technologies for interoperability and communication on the grid. Industrial
stakeholders in MAS2TERING are of the opinion that it is essential for smart grid development to take
advantage of the available technological components that facilitate the combined usage of the most widely
used communication technologies – namely GPRS, PLC and wireless mesh.
